Topical Medications

The active ingredient in most skin bleaching creams is hydroquinone (HYE-droe-kwin-own). When applied topically, hydroquinone can temporarily lighten dark-colored patches of skin (liver spots, age spots, and freckles). Creams containing hydroquinone at concentrations of 2% or less can be purchased without a prescription. Unfortunately, the over-the-counter products lack effectiveness for some clients.  All of our bleaching creams require a valid prescription from your prescriber.

Apothecary Options prepares hydroquinone creams in concentrations of 2-10%.  We can also add tretinoin (the active ingredient found in Retin-A). Tretinoin works to exfoliate the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.   If requested, we can also add Kojic acid to the formulation.  Kojic acid is a skin lightening agent that is derived from certain mushrooms and works by mildly inhibiting the production of skin pigments.  Kojic acid also has been shown to exhibit both antibacterial and anti fungal properties.
